Divorce tips to help you move forward

When you're going through a divorce, it can be hard to think about the future. You know that you want to move forward, and you know that divorce will not define the rest of your life, but you also have trouble looking past it.

However, it's very important to look to the future, even while the divorce is still going on. What you plan to do in life may impact what child custody arrangement you want, for example, or where you plan to live. What type of support you get in terms of alimony or child support may define what type of future is financially possible.

With that in mind, here are a few tips to help you work your way through the divorce and move forward:

  • Never try to "get even" with your ex if they filed for divorce. You must let it go. Clinging to the past and feeling angry, frustrated or sad does not change anything. Focusing on a positive future is far more productive.
  • Connect with old friends and/or make new ones. Often, divorce feels hard because you suddenly feel alone. With a vibrant social life, it takes that edge off.
  • Write down how you feel. This helps you process your emotions and consider them carefully. People often find writing therapeutic, so starting a journal can be life-changing.
  • Do something new. Don't just think about how you wanted to be married. This single life comes with some new freedoms -- like the freedom to travel. Take advantage of that and do something exciting.

Again, you need to focus on the future even while getting divorced, so be sure you know exactly what legal options you have.
