Nurses have a high divorce rate

Thinking of becoming a nurse? It is a rather selfless occupation that allows you to give back and help those who need it most. It gives you the satisfaction of knowing that you're making a difference. You may even help save someone's life. It's a noble pursuit.

That said, you need to understand how it may impact the rest of your life. Experts warn that nurses have a higher divorce rate than average. They even say that when ranking professions that see the highest divorce rates, nursing makes it into the top 10.

Why is this? Every case is unique, but you can find some common threads. One of them is stress. Being a nurse is not easy. It can lead to high-stress levels, which then bleed over into personal relationships. For instance, you may not be able to deal with stress in a marriage if you're constantly dealing with it at work. Other reasons include:

  • Nurses often have to work long hours. Many have to work night shifts. If their spouse works a day shift, they barely see one another.
  • Nurses may have to work at inopportune times. This can include things like mandatory overtime, weekend shifts and even holiday shifts.
  • Nurses may not get adequate pay. This can lead to financial stress for the family. Money is often linked to divorce, and it's just made worse by the extra stress of the profession.

If you do decide that it is time to end your marriage, it is important to slow down and carefully consider all of the legal steps you will need to take.
