Moving forward after divorce

You may never have planned to get divorced, but your spouse told you they were done with the marriage and filed. Maybe they just could not go on any longer, were too unhappy or found someone else. Sometimes, there is no single reason for a divorce. Rather, the marriage has become too constraining for one spouse.

To some degree, the reason doesn't even matter. The divorce is coming, and you're wondering how you're possibly going to move forward after it.

For some, it just takes focus on themselves. For instance, one woman went on vacation to Turks and Caicos. It was a place she'd always wanted to go. In the wake of her divorce, she decided to go alone.

She said it was a bit of a strange experience. Most people go as couples or families. She saw a lot of people on their honeymoons or celebrating milestones in their own marriages, like anniversaries. She was one of the few people traveling by herself.

But, at the same time, it helped her see that she was all right on her own. She could live life the way that she wanted to. She could accomplish her goals. She did not need to be married to get what she wanted out of life. That realization helped her move forward, even if it took a long time for her to get there.

Of course, not everyone needs a tropical vacation to show them how to move forward, but it's important to think about life after the split. What do you want to get out of the divorce to make your life into what you want it to be? What legal steps can you take to accomplish that? Carefully consider things like property division, child custody, alimony and much more.
