How long can I receive alimony?

While a couple is married, especially if the marriage has lasted years, the spouses get used to a certain standard of living, and one of them may have given up their jobs. So, when the marriage ends, one of the spouses, generally, the one who no longer is active in the workforce, will have problems maintaining the same standard of living. One of the ways courts rectify this financial imbalance is by ordering one partner to support the other through alimony payments.

Same sex divorces with children may present unique challenges

Earning the right to marry at the Federal level was a major step forward for same-sex families. Suddenly, even the most resistant states got forced to acknowledge the legitimacy of same sex marriages and families. Couples who had been together for years, even decades, flocked to the alter or the justice of the peace in droves to publicly celebrate their unions.

Although it is not common for grandparents to gain custody of their grandchildren, certain circumstances make it a viable option. In all cases, it must be in the child’s best interest for their grandparents to be their primary caregivers. Otherwise, the court will decide to keep the child in the custody of their parents. Divorce Attorney Gets His Money's Worth

A man who was going through a divorce in New York hired attorney Richard J. Barrett to represent him in Staten Island. Unfortunately for the client, he didn't realize his attorney would be taking much more than the typical attorney's fees. Attorney Barrett took a check from his client for $125,000 that was meant to be given to his client's wife as part of the divorce settlement. However, when the wife received a check for that amount and tried to deposit it in her bank account, it bounced. Another attempt was made in May, but the account was found to have been drained completely. Barrett was arrested in early August after being charged with second-degree grand larceny, second-degree criminal possession of stolen property and issuing a bad check. He is scheduled to appear in court again in October.

This problem has become too common in Texas, with over $55 million that was not give to families in the third quarter of this year.

Safe Exchange Zone Established in Virginia

Chesterfield County, Virginia has established a "safe exchange zone" in a courthouse complex parking lot. Among other reasons, the idea was formed in order to create a space where families could safely meet during child custody exchanges. The Chesterfield Sheriff's Office explains that the cameras surrounding the area will increase security and be handy in the event of illegal activity.
