Bill Restricts Punishment for Discrimination

The Virginia House of Delegates recently passed a bill that would protect agencies in the state from being punished if they continued to discriminate against gay, transgender or people who have had extramarital relations. The bill, the "Government Nondiscrimination Act," was sponsored by C. Todd Gilbert, Rep. Those in favor of the bill says it will help Virginians preserve their religious beliefs, while opponents see it as another excuse to discriminate.

Gilbert said that the bill would prevent businesses from being denied contracts and financial assistance from the government if they did exercise their right to turn people away. Though it passed in the Republican-controlled house, Democratic Governor Terry McAuliffe said he would veto the bill when he got to his desk.
