New Michigan State Bill Proposes Two-Parent Adoption

Last week, Michigan State Representative Jeff Irwin proposed a bill that would legalize unwed, two-parent adoption. This occurred after April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse were denied their request for second-parent adoption. Unsurprisingly, this case later shifted from its original intent to a broader consideration of same-sex marriage. This is because though there are marriage bans preventing same sex marriage in place currently, many same-sex couples are still looking to adopt.

Irwin's legislation, House Bill 4133, would guarantee the same benefits to children of single parents or unmarried couples as those given to children of married couples. Such benefits include health insurance, authorization for medical care and continued care by one parent in case of death or separation of the other. In support of the bill, Irwin cites studies that show the importance to children of maintaining a safe, loving home with, most importantly, two stable parents. This bill will ensure that more children in Michigan can enjoy benefits of two parents who share all of the rights and responsibilities of parenthood.

Oregon, California, and Wisconsin already have similar laws in place.
