Pulling the Wool over Immigration's Eyes

There are many ways illegal immigrants gamble with their lives to enter the United States illegally: through human smugglers, by riding atop freight trains, and even handing federal agents at ports of entry fake documents. This last option seems to have become more popular over the course of the last year with about 25% more people turned away after presenting fake or stolen documents, as reported by the Department of Homeland Security.

Customs and Border Protection recently released statistics that state that from Del Rio to Brownsville, Texas, there were about 39,000 prospective immigrants found inadmissible, up from about 31,800 during the 2013 fiscal year. Similar numbers were found in the El Paso field office where there were about 10,170 in admissibles, up from 7,855 in the 2013 fiscal year. This becomes a serious issue as though it is possible to claim asylum if caught crossing illegally, prospective immigrants who are caught presenting false papers are never again granted the chance to gain legal access into the country, not even through marriage or sponsorship.

With new technology and biometrics, it is becoming more and more difficult to use fake documents without getting caught. However, many illegal immigrants still attempt to fool immigration agents due to increased manpower on the country's southern border which makes it harder for people to sneak across the Rio Grande. For example, Border Patrol agents on the southwest border have doubled to about 18,100 since 2001.
