Last week, the Washington Post reported that Republican legislators in Texas are trying to pass a measure that would prevent same-sex couples from obtaining marriage licenses. This push is in response to the upcoming U.S. Supreme Court ruling next month which could declare same-sex marriage legal.
A representative from just outside of Houston, Cecil Bell, wants to make sure the a license would only be issued for “the union between one man and one woman,” and that the bill “simply preserves state sovereignty over marriage.” If the Supreme Court rules that same-sex marriage is legal, it will cause many issues in the event the proposed bill passes in Texas. Gay rights advocates strongly oppose this measure, reasoning that it is a violation of human rights. The legislative session will end in two weeks.
